Barrowland Ballroom, Glasgow
Look for the neon stars on the Gallowgate. Maggie McIver, the “Barras Queen”, opened the Barrowland Ballroom in 1934 as a dance hall for the traders of Glasgow’s famous Barras market. Fire destroyed it in 1958, and the rebuilt ballroom reopened in 1960. Its second life began in 1983, when Simple Minds filmed the video for “Waterfront” here and relaunched it as a gig venue. Its sprung maple floor bounces under around 1,900 fans, and playing here is a rite of passage for touring bands. Biffy Clyro played three nights in a row in December 2014. The names of more than 2,000 artists who’ve played here are set into the pathway outside.
