The Joiners, Southampton
The Joiners on St Mary Street holds around 200 people, yet few rooms in Britain can match its roll call. Bands first played the back room in 1968. Since then, Oasis, Radiohead, Coldplay, Muse and Arctic Monkeys have all squeezed onto its tiny stage on the way up. Oasis played on 29 March 1994, a fortnight before “Supersonic” came out, and the Manic Street Preachers reportedly signed their first major-label deal backstage. NME named it Britain’s Best Small Venue in 2013 and again in 2015, and Frank Turner calls it his favourite venue in the world. Since 2025 it has been owned through the Own Our Venues scheme, which secures its future. Read our article on The Joiners Arms.
